Assistant Defence Minister Zlatko Gareljic said that the ministry
had ordered a study from the Faculty of Computing and Electrical
Engineering to test the electro-magnetic radiation of the system,
which proved that the danger of radiation for humans was minimal.
In an address to representatives of municipal and local authorities
from Moscenicka Draga and the wider Liburnija region, Gareljic
reminded that the system, consisting of five radar stations, would
replace the existing 18 radar stations in Croatia.
The existing stations, he said, transmitted signals 50 times
stronger than those transmitted by the new system. The new radar
system will serve military and civil purposes, primarily to
maintain the security of Croatia's air space, he said.
In a tolerant atmosphere the citizens who gathered at the
presentation enquired about the system, opposing its being placed
on Mt. Ucka.
The Croatian government signed the contract on the purchase of the
US$130-million radar system in 1999. The first location suggested
for the system was the highest Ucka mountain peak of Vojak, which
was subsequently rejected, and it was agreed that the radars be
place at Brgud, a peak south of Vojak. Ucka has the status of a
nature park.
