Human rights today are a crucial standard based on which it is
estimated whether a country is truly democratic, Mesic said.
The Republic of Croatia has irretrievably and firmly opted for
democracy-building and therefore has the right to seek its place in
the circle of democratic, civilised countries. Our choice includes
the fulfilment of certain conditions, one of the crucial ones being
respect for and the realisation of human and minority rights, said
Mesic.
Croatia is rightfully expected to appropriately sanction those who
either instigated grave violations of human rights or carried them
out, as well as to cooperate with international institutions which
are in charge of this issue, Mesic said in the statement.
