Jose Maria Rodrigues da Silva was appointed president of the
Society. He is a Supreme Court judge who 11 years ago initiated a
petition demanding that the Portuguese government support
Croatia's right to independence. The petition was signed by 200
eminent Portuguese citizens on 20 November 1991, at the height of
the war in Croatia, and was sent to Portugal's President at the
time, Mario Soares.
Croatian Ambassador Darko Bekic presented the Society with a
collection of 250 books donated by the Croatian Science Ministry.
