Addressing a news conference in Zagreb's Dubrava Clinic, Bergovec
and Health Minister Andro Vlahusic declined to evaluate if Bobetko,
who was hospitalised yesterday, was capable of being served with an
indictment from the UN war crimes tribunal at The Hague.
Bergovec and Vlahusic said they were primarily in charge of
Bobetko's health. They would make an evaluation regarding the
indictment only at the request of judicial bodies within the court
procedure underway.
General Bobetko has been put in a special suite in the Dubrava
Clinic's coronary unit. He is under constant doctor and nurse
supervision.
No special security measures have been taken in the unit. The
general, according to his wishes, will be visited by his family and
a few other persons he has selected, Bergovec said, declining to say
who those persons are.
After almost two months of home treatment, during which it became
clear the general had to be hospitalised, his condition in the last
five days seriously deteriorated.
"His heart function deteriorated despite a high dosage of medicines
and daily adaptations of treatment, regular check-ups and visits by
doctors," said Bergovec.
Minister Vlahusic said the Croatian Health Insurance Institute
would pay for the overtime of nurses and doctors who treated Bobetko
at home.
Vlahusic and Bergovec said the Zagreb County Court had still not
requested an expert medical examination which should establish if
the general was capable of standing trial. They added there would be
no obstacles to such an examination.
