In 2002 and 2003 the HZ plans to overhaul a number of railway
sections in order to increase the speed of travel along corridor
railways, particularly along Vb pan-European corridor. The
reconstruction works include preparations for the introduction of
tilting trains. The repair is expected to increase the speed of
travel to 160 km/ph at the most as well as the carrying capacity and
railway capacity in cargo transport.
In 2003, 148.7 km of railways should be reconstructed, and costs are
estimated at 586.2 million kuna (approx. 80.2 million euros). The
remaining 107.6 kilometres of railways will be repaired in 2004,
which will cost 393.6 million kuna (around 53.91 million euros).
HZ officials state that insufficient investments have caused a
decrease in the quality of railway infrastructure, which has
resulted in delays along some railway sections.
