According to Thursday's statements by Croatian government
officials, the UN war crimes tribunal's prosecution has issued an
indictment against this 83-year-old Croatian general.
"Lately there have been different pieces of information and I have
to think about and analyse them, so that I can sensibly assess
them," said Gen. Bobetko, who was one of the most prominent military
officials, an army chief-of-staff and commander of many liberating
operations during the Homeland Defence War.
"I have my standpoints and when I consider everything carefully, I
will tomorrow inform the Croatian public of it - what I think and
feel. The Croatian public, the Croatian people expect this of me and
they are entitled to it," Bobetko said.
He added that he was taking care so that his actions are not
detrimental to the people who want to help him.
On Thursday morning, Premier Ivica Racan informed the Croatian
government that the Hague-based UN tribunal (ICTY) had forwarded a
request to his cabinet to help organise an interview between ICTY
prosecutors and General Bobetko in his capacity as indictee.
In the afternoon, the Premier told the Sabor that the government had
received from The Hague an announcement that the Tribunal's
prosecution would forward the Bobetko indictment to Zagreb on
Thursday evening.
The contents of the indictment are still unknown.
Racan said the government would make no decision on the matter
before the parliament discussed the case.
