ZAGREB, Sept 18 (Hina) - The Zagreb Municipal State Prosecutor's
Office on Wednesday requested an investigation into former
ombudsman Petar Sale over suspicion that, contrary to his
authorities, he okayed an unfounded claim by a company to which the
state now has to pay 17.4 million kuna (EUR2.4 million). #L#
Sale is suspected of having okayed the claim in proceedings at the
Zagreb Municipal Court in which the Republic of Croatia was
defendant and the Metkovic-based company "Jambo" plaintiff.
By acting accordingly, Sale made the state have to pay said sum to
"Jambo", read a statement signed by Zagreb Municipal State
Prosecutor Vesna Abramovic.
Charges against Sale were pressed by the Defence Ministry in June.
He was suspected of having abused his position and authority, of
having okayed, contrary to ministry instructions, a ministry debt
to "Jambo" which, the ministry said, had expired based on a 31
January 1999 contract between the ministry and the company. This
eventuated in a court ruling to the damage of the ministry.
