"I am sorry that it had to come to this because this was not
necessary," Racan told journalists outside the government building
following a meeting with the heads of the ruling coalition.
He said that members of the government and the unassigned policemen
had been neighbours over the past few months and that there were
pleasant and unpleasant moments which he did not comment on.
Members of intervention police units on Tuesday night following an
incident caused by two of the protesters, broke up the protest which
had been continuing for several months on St. Mark's Square. Some of
the protesters withdrew into St. Mark's church and are still
located inside the church.
At about noon Wednesday the police arrested the leader of the
unassigned policemen, Filip Lacic, because as the organiser of the
public protest he did not ensure public order and peace.
