Reporters were prevented from meeting Petrac after his release at
the request of his lawyer, Marijan Pedisic.
Zagreb police had searched for Petrac for more than a year in
connection with the downtown Zagreb murder of Vjeko Slisko.
Earlier today, Croatian police reported that it had arrested Petrac
at a Slovenia-Croatia border crossing. Petrac's attorney, however,
claimed that his client had volunteered to talk to the police after
having spent a long period of time abroad to nurse his health.
During an investigation and a trial into Slisko's assassins,
several witnesses said that Petrac was the leader of one of Zagreb's
mob clans and that he was behind the Slisko murder.
An official with the Office for the Prevention of Corruption and
Organised Crime (USKOK) has said that USKOK is interested in Petrac
in connection with transcripts of telephone conversations which
link him to cigarette smuggling and the Croatian mob.
