WASHINGTON, Aug 23 (Hina) - Some 50 kg of uranium were transported
from a nuclear reactor in Vinca, near Belgrade, under strong
military control and monitoring by American and Russian officials
and experts, Washington Post daily reports on Friday. #L#
The enriched uranium, sufficient to construct three nuclear bombs,
was taken from Vinca on Wednesday night under helicopter
surveillance and accompanied by about 1,200 members of special
military units.
It took 17 hours to store about 6,000 ingots of uranium into special
containers for transport to Russia from where the uranium was
bought some 20 years ago.
Washington Post assesses the operation as the first great mutual
success of the United States and Russia to remove uranium reserves
which governments such as Iraq, Iran and North Korea, as well as
terrorists (like Al Qaida) would love to get hold of.
