Joras was taken into custody on Wednesday to Pula County prison to
serve a 30-day sentence. According to an explanation by the
Magistrate's Court in Umag, since Joras had not paid seven fines
ordered by the court since 1999, the judge ruled that he serve 30
days in prison to compensate for the fines.
Starman, an attorney based in Kopar and a former MP in Slovenia,
told a press conference that he tried to visit Joras on Wednesday in
the Pula prison, but he did not succeed in doing so. Starman spoke to
prison officials who advised him that Joras was allowed only to
contact the Slovenian Ambassador in Zagreb with whom he had spoken
on Wednesday night.
Ljubljana sent an official protest note on Wednesday night in
response to Joras's arrest. The protest note stressed that this
would not contribute to constructive relations between Slovenia
and Croatia.
