The support and patrol unit which is a part of the Bosnian State
Border Service consists of 25 members and supervisors from both
Bosnian entities.
The chief of the Bosnian State Border Service, Mile Juric, said that
the unit was tactically trained in emergency intervention in the
search for arms and drugs smuggling, or potential terrorist
activities along the 1,550 kilometre state border.
The Bosnian border with neighbouring countries -- Serbia,
Montenegro and Croatia -- has over 400 potential hot spots where
smugglers can cross over. These loopholes in the border have
rendered Bosnia a focal point for smuggling and potential
terrorists from the East, but also from Western countries. These
present a threat to the political stability of Southeast Europe,
international politicians have cautioned.
Juric said that if necessary, the unit can intervene deep into
Bosnian territory, not only along the border.
