A decision to that effect was made by the competent commission of
the Zagreb City Authorities.
For the Zagreb metal-working industry, this is one of the biggest
ventures of the last decade.
Three companies submitted offers - Austria's Siemens, Italy's
Ansaldobreda, and Croatia's Koncar.
The Siemens offer was immediately discarded as it was not in
compliance with the basic conditions of the tender, said Ladislav
Prezigalo, chairman of the Zagreb City Authorities commission.
The commission chose the Croatian bidder as the offer was
technically better and more cost-effective, he said.
Asked how much domestic manufacturers would participate in the
production of new trams, Prezigalo said 35-40 percent of necessary
product would have to be imported.
Reporters asked about the accuracy of media reports that the
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development had abandoned
financing the tram production dissatisfied with the contents of the
tender which favoured domestic manufacturers. Prezigalo said the
reports were not true and that domestic manufacturers were not
given precedence.
