Petersen presented a plan to organise a combined meeting this
autumn with the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction
and Development with the aim of securing the financial
preconditions for as many refugee returns as possible to Southeast
Europe. He confirmed that the question of refugee returns in
Croatia was an economic and financial question and not a political
and security issue.
Soren Jessen-Petersen was a long time activist with the UN High
Commission for Refugees (UNCHR) where he was the assistant to the
High Commissioner between 1998 and 2001.
He was appointed to this latest position in June 2002 and succeeded
Hans Koschnick.
