The cost of the works is estimated at $US92.28 million and the
building was conducted by a consortium of seven Slavonian
construction companies.
The Croatian Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction and
Construction, Radimir Cacic, attended a ceremonious opening on
Monday.
The completion of the highway requires a further 30 odd kilometres,
said Stanko Kovac, the president of the Croatian Highways board. He
added, however, that this was not included in the building plans by
the year 2005. The reason for this being that the volume of traffic
per day is about 1,300 vehicles which is ten times less than before
the Homeland war.
The building of the Zagreb-Lipovac Highway with a total length of
264 kilometres began in 1976. To date 235 kilometres has been
constructed.
The highway is located on the Tenth European Corridor through
Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Macedonia and Greece and
will be the shortest route between Western Europe and the Near
East.
