Talks also focused on the possibility of the EIB becoming involved
in tourist and water protection projects.
A possible tourist project could involve participation in the
reconstruction of hotels damaged during the war (e.g. Srebrno,
Kupari and others) which the EIB would become involved with once
investors were found.
There was talk of the EIB possibly being involved in financing the
Pula-Karlovac gas pipeline as well as protecting waters along the
Adriatic. The entire project for dealing with liquid waste and
water protection along the Adriatic is estimated to exceed EUR250
million.
Next month it is expected the EIB will decide on its participation
in financing a section of the Rijeka-Zagreb motorway.
Along with the motorway investment, EIB has a significant role in
financing the maintenance and reconstruction of roads in Croatia.
Last year, a loan of EUR60 million was approved to Croatian Roads
for the reconstruction of the road infrastructure (with a total
value of EUR122 million).
The EIB is also involved in projects to renew the railway with a
value of EUR40 million in loans earmarked for Croatian Railways to
reconstruct the railway on the Pan-European V.c. Corridor.
Co-operation between Croatia and the EIB - owned by member
countries of the European Union - is based on a framework agreement
signed in late 2000. Since then the EIB has concluded five loan
agreements with Croatia with a total value of EUR146 million.
