The labour force survey is conducted by the Central Bureau of
Statistics twice a year.
There were 289,000 unemployed in Croatia in the second half of 2001,
as against 380,000 stated by the HZZ, according to the survey.
The survey also shows that 84 percent of the unemployed are
registered with the HZZ, whereas 16 percent were not interested in
registering.
Of 380,000 unemployed registered with the HZZ, 130,000 do not meet
international unemployment criteria. These are defined with three
conditions - that the unemployed person has not worked in the week
in question, that he/she is looking for a job, and that he/she is
willing to accept an offered job. These criteria define an employed
person as everyone who in the week in question has worked at least
one hour and has been compensated for it.
Under these criteria, 63.7 percent of those registered with the HZZ
qualifies as unemployed. As for the rest, 19.5 percent is inactive,
i.e. they have not looked for a job or cannot accept a job offer,
while 13.4 percent is employed.
The labour force survey is the most comprehensive labour market
research conducted in Croatia since November 1996.
The labour force includes 1,478,000 employed and 289,000
unemployed persons, and both figures grew in comparison to the
first half of 2001, employment by 1.2 and unemployment by 9.5
percent. This resulted in an increase of the unemployment rate,
which from 15.3 in the first half rose to 16.3 percent in the second
half of 2001.
