During her two-day stay in Croatia, del Ponte will visit eastern
Slavonia on Tuesday, namely the places mentioned in ICTY
indictments.
The Hague-based tribunal has so far issued several indictments for
crimes committed in Croatia, of which two refer to eastern
Slavonia. Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic is indicted
for crimes against humanity in Croatia, including eastern
Slavonia. Three commanders of the former Yugoslav Army - Mile
Mrksic, Veselin Sljivancanin and Miroslav Radic - are indicted for
the slaughter of the wounded from Vukovar in Ovcara.
In the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar, del Ponte will hold talks
with a Croatian government delegation led by Vice Premier Goran
Granic. The delegation will also include Justice Minister Ingrid
Anticevic Marinovic.
During her stay in Vukovar, the ICTY Chief Prosecutor will also hold
talks with about 15 witnesses who survived Serb crimes and
representatives of associations of missing and detained persons in
Sotin.
Del Ponte will also meet European Union ambassadors.
Before the arrival of the ICTY Chief Prosecutor, Croatia expressed
interest in having the tribunal turn over some cases to the domestic
judiciary. Croatian officials also expressed belief that the ICTY
would expand the indictment against the leader of rebel Serbs in
Croatia, Milan Martic, who has so far been indicted for the 1995
shelling of Zagreb.
