Powell's spokesman Richard Boucher said the US Secretary of State
was interested in the political situation in Montenegro after the
resignation of Prime Minister Filip Vujanovic and the decision of
the Liberal Alliance not to support the Montenegrin government
because it signed the three-year agreement on a joint state with
Serbia.
Boucher said that Powell supported the agreement and expressed hope
that it would help the two sides achieve their goal of European
integration.
Djukanovic assured Powell that Montenegro would implement the
agreement and that the purpose of the upcoming referendum was not
leaving the joint state.
Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Nebojsa Covic said in Washington
today that he feared the Montenegrin referendum would mark the
beginning of new disintegration processes and instability in the
Balkans.
"If we allow a precedent, referendums by secessionists will
continue... Albanians in Kosovo will want a referendum, as will
Serbs and Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina... there will be no end to
disintegration processes," Covic said.
