diseases "Jordanovac" on Tuesday performed the first lung
transplant operation in Croatia and this part of Europe. #L#
The patient is a 64-year-old male from Zagreb who suffered from an
obstructive lung disease.
The patient is in the intensive care unit and his condition is
stable, but it is still too early for any long-term prognoses, said
the clinic's director, Dr. Ljubomir Pavelic.
The donor is a 45-year-old man who died of a brain stroke at a Zagreb
hospital yesterday.
The three-hour-long surgery was performed by a team of ten
surgeons, pulmologist and anaesthesiologists, headed by Dr. Zoran
Slobodnjak.
The first lung transplant operation was performed in Toronto in
1983. Lung transplants are considered the "crown" of surgery due to
their complexity.
