During a debate about the situation in Kosovska Mitrovica, at the
first session of the Kosovo parliament, Hamiti said that UNMIK, the
UN mission, and the Kosovo authorities did not control the entire
territory of the province.
Hamiti asked that KFOR, the international peace-keepers, and UNMIK
representatives respect the territorial integrity of Kosovo and
that the UN Civil Administrator for Kosovo, Michael Steiner,
appoint an Albanian as well as a Serbian co-ordinator in the
government commission responsible for the return of Albanians to
the northern part of Kosovo.
Serbian representatives in the parliament's Presidency rejected
these remarks and stressed that the question of Kosovska Mitrovica
should not be regarded as an isolated matter.
Emphasising that the question of Kosovska Mitrovica is of
existential significance for the remaining Serbs in Kosovo,
Serbian representative Oliver Ivanovic asked that a debate be
conducted about where and what rights do Serbs enjoy in Pristina,
Pec, Prizren, Urosevac, Gnjilane and other towns in Kosovo.
