The SPH has taken the initiative for the changing of the law
regarding the use of force and firearms, and amendments to the Penal
Code, asking for more drastic punishment of offenders guilty of
assaulting officers, the union president, Dubravko Jagic, said.
Jagic requested of Interior Minister Sime Lucin to immediately pass
a regulation on the actions of police which would fill the legal
void due to which officers are not certain in which situations they
may use firearms.
The government is economising on police officers who are badly and
inadequately equipped, while it is at the same time financially
rehabilitating the Rijecka banka which was already rehabilitated
once before with the money of tax payers, Jagic said.
He said that the union would on Thursday meet representatives of the
Interior Ministry, to whom he will suggest the establishment of a
commission for amendments to the Law on Police.
The SPH, which numbers most members of the Interior Ministry,
called on other unions to join it in the defence of the interest of
the profession.
Since 1996, 38 attempts of murder of police have been registered, of
which three ended with deaths, and one police officer subsequently
succumbed to his wounds, Jagic said.
The most recent murder attempt happened last Saturday in front of a
shopping centre in Zagreb, when a driver, Antonija Janjic, tried to
kill police officer Zvonimir Kolakovic. Fortunately, the bullets
got stuck and she could not fire the gun.
