This is the second generation of schools which have been granted
this status. Last year 20 schools were declared international eco-
schools.
Deputy Education and Sports Minister Ivan Vavra said the programme
of eco-schools was initiated by the Council of Europe. He said there
was no better approach to environmental protection than the
education of young people and cooperation with companies and local
communities.
Assistant European Integration Minister Marija Pejcinovic Buric
said one third of all European Union regulations to which Croatia
had to adjust referred to environmental protection.
An assistant to the head of the State Water Administration, Zeljko
Ostojic, said Croatia had to invest four billion euros to adjust to
EU standards in the area of waste water treatment. He added that
Croatia was at the European level regarding the connection to the
public water supply system, but stressed the discouraging fact was
that only four percent of all connections had filters for the
treatment of waste water.
