RIJEKA, March 4 (Hina) - A floor mosaic believed to date back to the
fifth or sixth century AD was discovered in the northern Adriatic
seaport of Rijeka earlier this week during excavations carried out
around the Mary's Assumption church.#L#
According to experts of the Culture Ministry's department for the
protection of cultural heritage, the mosaic belonged to an early
Christian church which was located on approximately the same spot
as the church of Mary's Assumption and its bell-tower.
A few years ago, also during excavations for the setting of
installations, a preserved part of a floor mosaic was discovered
near this week's finding.
This location is the oldest most-populated part of Rijeka. The
oldest archaeological findings proved this used to be a Roman
settlement with thermae in the first centuries AD.
