ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - Some fifteen non-governmental organisations and people on Tuesday night expressed concern about the non airing of the "Latinica" show which was to be aired on Monday night focusing on the law against Ustashi
idealism. They demanded that the Croatian Television's editor-in-chief and responsible editor make a decision on airing the show as soon as possible. The banning of Latinica's show speaking about an issue which people have been silent about for more than a decade is a serious decision and demands a detailed explanation, especially because it is a precedent in the past several years, not practice. Since this is the first important decision made by the new editor-in-chief Jasna Ulaga Valic, it gives even more rise to an open discussion, the Centre for Peace Studies and 14 other non-governmental organisations said. The banning of Latinica's show speaking about an issue which people
have been silent about for more than a decade is a serious decision
and demands a detailed explanation, especially because it is a
precedent in the past several years, not practice.
Since this is the first important decision made by the new editor-
in-chief Jasna Ulaga Valic, it gives even more rise to an open
discussion, the Centre for Peace Studies and 14 other non-
governmental organisations said.
"The lack of proffessionalism of journalists is noticed only when
one tries to speak critically about domestic fascism, while it is
not even noticed during the airing of inflammatory calls for hatred
and violence, may lead us to very negatively assess the work of the
public television, whose responsibility is to represent general
good, and open a public discussion about key social processes, the
statement said.
The NGOs are wondering whether those responsible for the failure of
Latinica to air held the Croatian public incompetent of
independently making decisions on the problem of the Ustashi
ideology .
"Such decisions remind of past one-party bans for disturbing
people," the statement added.
The statement warned that "the plaque to Jure Francetic, squares,
streets and schools given the names of fascists will not disappear
from our society by suffocating a public discussion".
The statement was signed by the Peace Studies Centre, the Anti-war
Campaign, B.a.B.e., the Pakrac women's klub, ZaMirNET, the
Voluntary Centre, Women War Victims Centre, Marina Skrabalo, Aida
Bagic, Ivana Percl Juric, Iskorak, Autonomous Women's House,
Counter-Lesbian Movement, Porec Civil Initiatives Centre and the
Losinj Women's Group.
