PRISTINA, Feb 19 (Hina) - Kosovo Albanian leaders on Tuesday rejected a proposal to grant autonomy to Serbs in northern Kosovo after evaluating that such a step would lead to the division of the southern Yugoslav province. The
proposal for the autonomy of the predominantly Serb northern Kosovo was put forward by the president of the Serb Resistance Movement, Momcilo Trajkovic, after several days of protests in Kosovska Mitrovica at which the Serbs are demanding that the northern part of this town be proclaimed a separate municipality. The protests come in the wake of a decision of the UN Mission to Kosovo to place the municipal seat in the southern, predominantly Albanian part of the town, while keeping only a municipal office in the north. Albanian politicians believe this request is contrary to a UN Security Council resolution on Kosovo, and point out that all the rights of every minority in Kosovo are guaranteed

rejected a proposal to grant autonomy to Serbs in northern Kosovo
after evaluating that such a step would lead to the division of the
southern Yugoslav province.
The proposal for the autonomy of the predominantly Serb northern
Kosovo was put forward by the president of the Serb Resistance
Movement, Momcilo Trajkovic, after several days of protests in
Kosovska Mitrovica at which the Serbs are demanding that the
northern part of this town be proclaimed a separate municipality.
The protests come in the wake of a decision of the UN Mission to
Kosovo to place the municipal seat in the southern, predominantly
Albanian part of the town, while keeping only a municipal office in
the north.
Albanian politicians believe this request is contrary to a UN
Security Council resolution on Kosovo, and point out that all the
rights of every minority in Kosovo are guaranteed.
