parliamentary representative, Ivic Pasalic, on Friday announced he
would run for the party's president at the upcoming 7th party
convention.
Pasalic said his programme included a programme of
decentralisation and modernisation of the HDZ and a programme of
the country's economic development.
Pasalic told reporters he had informed the incumbent HDZ president,
Ivo Sanader, about his intention, adding his candidacy should not
be seen as a conflict between him and Sanader, but as an effort to
find solutions to burning problems in the country with clear ideas
and programmes.
A total of 1,000 signatures of HDZ members are required to make
Pasalic's candidacy valid.
Pasalic also said problems that needed to be solved were being
neglected and insinuations and unfounded accusations were being
made instead. It is about time this stopped, said Pasalic, and added
he did not intend to demand apology or satisfaction for attacks he
had been exposed to in the past few years.
During the rule of the late Croatian president Franjo Tudjman,
Pasalic was the president's advisor and one of the most influential
figures in Croatia's political life.
