ZAGREB, Feb 13 (Hina) - Lawyers are not the first who should be put behind bars for procrastinating court proceedings, the president of the Croatian Bar Association, Ranko Pelicaric, said on Wednesday, commenting on Supreme Court
president Ivica Crnic's claim that lawyers abusing their rights should be imprisoned. In an interview with the Vecernji List daily of Monday, Crnic said "the court should perhaps be given the possibility to put a lawyer who abuses his rights behind bars for a while." Stating that he did not know if Crnic had indeed said this, Pelicaric said he did not know about any one case of procrastinated court proceedings which would call for punishing the lawyer so drastically. He conceded lawyers might share some responsibility, but were not the only ones responsible for overlong trials. Pelicaric reminded that procedure legislation contains provisions based on which judges may discipline
