He said President Stjepan Mesic's recent visit to the Ukraine had
turned a new page in bilateral relations.
An agreement was reached on that occasion to liberalise visa
requirements with Croatia before the start of the summer 2002
tourist season, which the Ukraine applauded, said the consul,
reminding that with a population of 50 million the Ukraine was an
attractive tourist-generating market.
The Ukraine maintains the liberalisation of the visa regime will
considerably contribute to the development of business and
economic cooperation as well.
"Trade between the two countries last year was a mere US$34
million," said Oksana Dramaretska, a representative of the
Ukrainian Embassy in Zagreb. She reminded a Ukrainian-Croatian
business forum was taking place in Zagreb in late April.
Besides a visa agreement, whose final draft, acceptable to both
sides, is being drawn up, the Ukraine wishes to sign a consular
convention with Croatia, an agreement on legal assistance in civil,
family and criminal proceedings, an agreement on the recognition of
education documents, and an employment agreement.
Consul Olifirov maintains the two countries' joint foreign policy
goals, first of all full-right membership in the European Union,
would certainly contribute to the further strengthening of
consular cooperation.
