The former Stability Pact co-ordinator believes it is unacceptable
that this sensitive region, which is part of Europe, has been
entrusted to Chris Patten, who also heads projects for Africa,
Latin America and East Timor. Hombach claims the office should be
held by the current commissioner for EU enlargement, Guenther
Verheugen.
Considering the fact that it proved successful in South-East
Europe, the Stability Pact concept should be applied to other
crisis areas, such as the Middle East or Afghanistan, as well, he
said.
