ZAGREB, Jan 16 (Hina) - The changes in the Interior Ministry's Rule
Book regarding the transport of hazardous matter, effective today,
are a step forward in Croatia's commitment to being a tourist
destination and preserving the environment, Minister Sime Lucin
said in parliament on Wednesday.
Commenting on reactions to the changes, which permit the transport
of oil and oil products only by pipeline, rail, sea and river, Lucin
said they had been politicised due to the interests of some
financial groups.
More than 70 ecological incidents occurred in the last three years,
and an Interior Ministry analysis has shown the number of incidents
on roads not used by tanks and trailer trucks was much smaller, said
the minister.
Foreign Minister Tonino Picula confirmed the ban had elicited
negative reactions among neighbouring countries.
Commenting on claims by Damir Kajin of the Istrian Democratic
Assembly to the effect that citizens would suffer the most as a
result of the ban and that relations with Slovenia would escalate
further, Picula voiced hope the consequences would not be such.
Slovenia yesterday forwarded a protest note, stating the measure
was contrary to adopted and binding international agreements and
the principles of good neighbourly relations.
