OPATIJA, Dec 12 (Hina) - Over the past four years the Croatian
Journalists Association (HND) has done a lot on the social,
legislative, and international fronts, while failing the most in
professional ethics, HND president Dragutin Lucic said on Friday.

Lucic presented a report on HND performance during his four-year-
term at the Association's 44th electoral assembly in the northern
Adriatic resort of Opatija.
Lack of professionalism, disregard for the law and business ethics
must become expensive and punished most severely, Lucic said,
adding that initiatives launched by the HND Council of Honour,
journalists' drives and other HND activities had had limited
success in raising the level of professional ethics.
It has been agreed with the International Federation of Journalists
that in the future, this body will send a commission which will help
with its authority in especially grave violations of ethics and
media freedom, said Lucic.
He added it was necessary to adopt a national collective agreement
for journalists, and that the HND's priority would be support to the
Croatian Journalists Union in negotiations with employers.
Lucic said one should also demand the decriminalisation of slander,
and look for adequate rights for freelance and part-time
journalists so that their status could be equated to that of other
freelancers in Croatia.
The HND election assembly is taking place today and tomorrow as part
of Opatija Journalism Days.
