Europe (IDM) on Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of its
establishment. #L#
The main task of the IDM, chaired by Erhard Busek since 1995, is to
monitor political developments in the countries in the Danube
valley, especially in central and south-eastern European states.
During a special session, held in the Vienna-based National
Library, Austria's Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner said
this institute had done much for countries in the Danube basin, but
even more could be done in the future.
Being in favour of the enlargement of the European Union, the
Austrian minister went on to say that central and south-eastern
European countries should be offered European prospects.
Austrian President Thomas Klestil, whose letter was read at the
ceremony, praised the IDM for efforts to build bridges between
Austria and friends in central and south-eastern Europe.
