This is the first time the forum is taking place in Croatia, at the
invitation of President of the Republic Stjepan Mesic, who is
scheduled to deliver a speech on Tuesday.
The event was opened by former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari,
who initiated the forum in 2000. The forum has so far been held in
Istanbul, Athens and Stockholm.
The first day of the forum mainly focused on prospects of the region
within Europe and the present and future of participating
countries.
Ahtisaari said that this year's forum would be dedicated to
establishing dialogue between EU member states and non-members,
and promoting cooperation between the two European regions.
