SPELEOLOGISTS FIND 35 NEW CAVES IN NORTHERN VELEBIT NATIONAL PARK

ZAGREB, Aug 2 (Hina) - Croatian speleologists have discovered and explored 35 new caves in Northern Velebit National Park. Their overall length exceeds 1,800 metres and the deepest of them, called Paz Cave, measures 388 metres. Croatia boasts at least 8,000 caves and potholes. The longest cave, Djulin Ponor in the Gorski Kotar area, measures 16,396 metres, while Lukina Jama in Northern Velebit, is the deepest, measuring 1,392 metres. Croatian caves and potholes are among the richest in the world in endemic underground fauna. At least 13 new animal species have been found in Sipun Cave near Cavtat alone.(hina) vm
