ZAGREB, July 26 (Hina) - Compared to other transition countries, Croatian companies spend the least on bribes, according to an article in this week's Trgovina business magazine. #L# After examining the operations of 3,000 Croatian companies, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development experts have established that only 2.1 percent of annual turnover goes to pay bribes. According to the Bank's data, companies in Slovenia spend 3.4 percent of annual turnover on bribes, while in Georgia the figure is as high as 8.1 percent. Data show that Russian companies are the most inclined to pay bribes in order to land profitable deals abroad, says the article. Of course, the extent of corruption in Croatia is unknown even though "everyone" knows it hampers normal business, turns away foreign investors and destimulates domestic entrepreneurs, the article read. It is estimated that only four percent of cases of corruption in Croatia get reported. A total of 3,316 corruption-related reports were made in the 1992-7 period, when 1,408 indictments were filed and 570 persons were sentenced. (hina) ha
