"The questions are such that we can answer them in a few days," Lucin
said in the police headquarters on Friday, adding that he had
expected more difficult queries.
Commenting on the questions covering the work of the police and the
interior ministry, Lucin said a majority of queries referred to
Croatia's stand on immigration, asylum, organised crime and drug
smuggling.
These are spheres in which the Croatian police have already
achieved enviable results, and the adjustment to European
standards will be no problem for the interior ministry, he said.
European Commission President Romano Prodi on Thursday presented
Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan with a questionnaire
containing about 2,500 queries that Croatia should answer within
the next three months. The European Commission prepares an opinion
on a country that has applied for EU membership on the basis of the
answers to the questions from the questionnaire and relying on
other sources. Its opinion is submitted to the EU Council of
Ministers to decide whether it will grant the given country
candidate status and to set a date for the start of negotiations on
full membership.
