ZAGREB, July 10 (Hina) - Croatian MPs ended Thursday's sitting by debating a final food bill which, among other things, regulates food healthiness, hygiene, and quality, the protection of marks of origin, subjects' commitments in food-related business, and adjusts Croatian legislation to European standards.
#L# Many MPs urged not passing the bill in urgent procedure so that some provisions might be improved. The majority stressed Croatia should remain a country of healthy food, free of genetically modified organisms. By legislating against such organisms, Croatia is adjusting its laws to European Union norms and accepting the EU's very conservative and cautious approach to genetically modified food, said Agriculture Minister Bozidar Pankretic. He added a laboratory for the detection of genetically modified food, as one of 30 in the world, was being set up at the Croatian Public Health Institute. Parliament resumes the current session on Friday by voting on debated items. (hina) ha sb
