VIENNA, July 10 (Hina) - The OSCE Permanent Council on Thursday considered a report by the organisation's Mission to Croatia and the tone of the debate was "positive", Croatia's Deputy Foreign Minister Ivan Simonovic said after the debate. #L# "The tone of today's debate on the report by the OSCE Mission on Croatia's progress was positive," said Simonovic. He added a number of delegations had extended support to Croatia and its bids to enter the European Union. The chief of the OSCE Mission to Croatia, Peter Semneby, warned, however, that including a provision on slander in the Penal Code might pose a problem for freedom of the media in Croatia. Simonovic said the government was of the opinion that freedom of the media should not be restricted by anything, but also thought there ought to be legal protection from the deliberate writing of untruths. He added a similar provision existed in the legislation of many European countries. After submitting the report, Semneby said Croatia had made a series of steps forward and now had to focus on the application of adopted laws. (hina) ha sb
