It will enable the two parties to introduce Croatia into the
European Union, develop the Croatian economy, protect human rights
and prevent the return of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party
to power, he told a news conference in Pula.
Jakovcic added that the IDS and the SDP wanted to carry out many
projects at local and county levels.
Jakovcic said that for the first time since parliamentary elections
in 1990 a coalition would be formed whose goal would be to win
elections with a programme aimed at citizens and the development of
Croatia rather than with one aimed at ousting a ruling party.
"In 1990 the HDZ won the elections on an anti-communist platform. In
2000, the change of government was a result of the toppling of the
HDZ, while the future coalition will create a positive atmosphere
in which the public will be able to say what they think about its
programme," Jakovcic said.
