Arlovic thanked Jeffers for the aid Croatia had received for the
return of refugees and displaced persons and the promotion of human
rights, democracy and the political system.
Croatia wants to become a full member of the European Union in 2007,
and further assistance from the USAID will be more than welcome,
Arlovic said.
Jeffers said that his agency would be operating in Croatia until
2008.
Jeffers stressed that the state should step up its efforts to assume
the role of a regulator in society and intervene less, particularly
in the economy. He expressed hope that the USAID and Croatian
institutions would continue their cooperation with the aim of
helping Croatia get closer to the EU.
Jeffers said that the most important goal of his agency was
cooperation between the American and Croatian people in all areas
of human achievement, the statement said.
