"Our priority on the foreign political front is the European Union.
We want to join NATO and have good relations with our neighbours,
but we don't want to neglect our relations with countries such as
Ukraine," Picula said at the end of his two-day visit to the former
Soviet republic.
"Ukraine is a step or two behind Croatia, but it is very keen on
implementing political and economic reforms to become more
attractive to the European Union," said Picula, adding that he had
informed the Ukrainian leadership of what Croatia needed to do to
submit an application for full membership of the EU.
Earlier today the Croatian official met Ukrainian Prime Minister
Viktor Janukovic and parliament president Volodimir Litvin. He
held talks with President Leonid Kucma and Foreign Minister Anatoli
Zelenko yesterday.
Today's talks confirmed the continuance of political dialogue
between the two countries, Picula said.
"This time, however, we have focused on advancing economic
cooperation," he said.
