The operation will include four national parks -- Plitvice Lakes,
North Mt. Velebit, Paklenica, Risnjak and two separate areas: the
Ogulin area and the Kupa River valley.
The study could verify hotspots of flora arrangements, i.e.
locations where a large number and variety of plant life are to be
found.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2005. Due to the extent
of the task, some Slovene botanists have been called in to assist.
On the flora checklist dating back half a century, Croatia is third
in Europe. A total of 4,300 vascular types of plants have been
registered, not including algae and moss. Including sub-species,
this number amounts to 5,350.
The list is headed by Slovenia, followed by Albania.
