Cox said he would not give any false hopes. Croatia may become an EU
member if there is will and determination, but much still has to be
done, he told Croatian reporters when asked whether Croatia might
join Rumania and Bulgaria in the next wave of enlargement in 2007.
The European Parliament official said that of all the countries in
the Stabilisation and Association process (SAp), Croatia had made
the most progress.
He hoped that Slovenia, which he said was practically an EU member,
and Croatia, which had made major headway, would become a role model
for other countries in the region.
The heads of state or government of the five SAp countries will join
EU leaders at the summit on Saturday.
Cox said those countries should not expect additional financial aid
from the summit, except for more investments into infrastructure.
