Due to a constant threat of new violent acts it necessary to
extradite all war criminals to justice, because without that, true
reconciliation is not possible, Del Ponte said.
Ahead of the European Union summit in Greece at which hope should be
given to the Balkans, Del Ponte says she feels it is necessary to
remind that Karadzic, Mladic and other war criminals are still at
large. Del Ponte calls on everybody, interested countries and the
international community, to ensure the arrest of principle
indictees.
The ICTY is not surprised with the existence of resistance towards
the tribunal, she said. There are nationalists in Zagreb, Pristina,
Belgrade and Sarajevo who cannot see clearly because of the recent
history, they are convinced that the others are real war criminals,
while their fellow countrymen are national heroes, the prosecutor
says.
Del Ponte writes that the international community must continue to
support the tribunal because without the support of the EU and the
U.S. it would not be possible to wrap up the job, namely to complete
everything by the end of 2004 when investigations would be
completed.
Arresting fugitives, starting with Karadzic and Mladic, indicting
high ranking war criminals and establishing national courts which
will be able to try war crimes will enable justice and instigate
true reconciliation in the process of integration with the European
Union, said Del Ponte.
