Veselin Sljivancanin, whom the UN war crimes tribunal indicted for war crimes in Croatia's Vukovar, was arrested on the night between Thursday and Friday in his Belgrade apartment, the Serbian government confirmed to Radio B92. The arrest operation started Thursday afternoon. His hardline nationalist supporters tried to prevent the police from entering his apartment claiming that Sljivancanin was not there. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the hostile crowd and then battered down the armoured door of Sljivancanin's flat shortly before midnight. Several persons were injured. Contrary to previous announcements, Sljivancanin did not put up resistance during the arrest. He is indicted together with Mile Mrksic and Miroslav Radic who have surrendered to the Hague tribunal.
