Nacional weekly. #L#
"The interview is authentic," said lawyer Marijan Pedisic.
In a brief statement, Gotovina's attorney expressed hope that the
interview would contribute to the solving of the situation
involving his client, who has been at large since the ICTY issued an
indictment against him in June 2001.
The interview with Nacional CEO Ivo Pukanic is Gotovina's first
public statement since the ICTY and Interpol issued a warrant for
his arrest.
In the interview Gotovina said he recognised the tribunal and
expressed readiness to talks to ICTY investigators in Zagreb in
order to prove his innocence, but not as an indictee but as a
suspect.
"If, after my testimony, they still stick to the indictment, then I
shall voluntarily go to The Hague," Gotovina said.
Pukanic, who conducted the interview with the fugitive general was
interrogated by the police at noon Tuesday. He is expected to make a
statement to the press.
