During and after the Homeland War, the UNICEF gave around US$25
million to children in Croatia. The funds were collected from
citizens, foundations and governments of developed countries
around the world.
After certain criteria, such as the mortality rate of children and
gross domestic income, reached acceptable levels, the UNICEF ended
its humanitarian phase, so future programmes will be financed from
domestic sources, Radocaj said.
The organisation will direct its new programmes to protecting
children from violence and to improving the quality of education,
which Croatian citizens underlined as the most important issues
which needed solving for the benefit of children.
A research conducted by the UNICEF indicates that 53 percent of
citizens donated funds for humanitarian purposes in the past year.
As many as 94 out of 100 questioned successful companies
participated in donations or sponsorships, but mostly sponsored
sports -- with 77 percent of the donated funds -- while only 20% were
donated for assistance to children.
Radocaj said that the UNICEF always assisted countries which could
not collect funds for the basic needs of children, for example for
vaccines.
