ZAGREB, April 16 (Hina) - Croatia's Cities Association says local self-government should play a more active role, in line with the European Charter of Local Self-Government, Association president and Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel has said. #L# Dissatisfied with the current self-government law, the Association will draw up a new one which should provide a more detailed definition of the rights, commitments and jurisdiction of local self-government units, said Obersnel. Addressing a news conference after last week's session of the Association's presidency, he said the Association endorsed a proposal on the direct election of executive authority carriers. The draft law should be harmonised with the constitutional changes of 2000, said Obersnel, adding the association was satisfied with the provisions of a bill on employees in units of local self- government. Obersnel said parliament should ratify the European Charter of Self-Government in full, thus contributing to its application in Croatia. The Croatian Cities Association was established on 19 June 2002 as a non-governmental, non-partisan, and voluntary organisation for the purpose of promoting cooperation among cities and joint interests in the development of local self-government units. It includes more than 50 percent of Croatian cities. (hina) ha
