The project was launched a year and a half ago, but its
implementation has not actually started yet, the head of Osijek's
Jewish community, Darko Fischer, said.
Although according to the 2001 census only one Jew lives in Vukovar,
the Osijek Jewish community has offered to rebuild the city
synagogue. Fischer recalled that around 1,800 Jews had lived in
Vukovar before WWII and the synagogue had existed until 1958, when
it was torn down.
